The Power of Positive Thinking

Posted by Ande Leslie.

Earlier this month, I found myself working extra-long weekend hours to help combat a crisis for a client, and the rainbow parade of Post-Its with to-do items was beginning to take over my desk, my laptop, and my closet-sized office. I remember referring to the word “meat” so often that weekend that it was starting to sound and look similar to a word from a foreign language.

Sometimes working in v-Fluence’s flexible work environment can make for a challenging situation, especially during a crisis-management moment. There isn’t a group of cheerleaders standing on the sidelines in your home office, chanting your name. Nor is there a coach pushing you to the finish line in the last few seconds of the game. It’s easy to develop a negative attitude when you feel as though you’re the only player in the game. That’s why it’s essential to always maintain a positive attitude and outlook.

It’s during times like these, though, that my co-workers step up to the plate and score the game-winning home run for the v-Fluence team. Everyone is willing to play their position and do whatever it takes in order to put another point on the scoreboard.

Portraying a positive attitude is probably the single-most important characteristic a successful employee can display and no one on the v-Fluence team falls short in this critical area. An upbeat attitude can be the crucial Hail Mary not only for employees, but for companies too. Had I not applied the “whatever it takes” attitude to my routine outlook on work, I may not have made it through that frantic weekend of press releases, Post-Its, and new priorities.

v-Fluence isn’t the only company that values positive attitudes. A quick Google search returned more than 500,000 results ranging from steps to tackle a negative attitude to employee tests during interviews; proving the right attitude is not only important for keeping your job, but also essential to getting a job. The difference between winners and losers is usually attitude.

I’ve realized a positive attitude is something you have to continuously strive for. Here are some tips I’ve gathered from my playbook to help you adjust or maintain your positive attitude:

  • Realize your attitude influences your thinking, your work output, and the attitudes of others around you;
  • Remember that positive thinking leads to positive results;
  • Create a game plan. Establishing goals helps put your attitude into action; and
  • Concentrate on the steps need to achieve your goals—and don’t let any negative thoughts distract you.

But a positive attitude isn’t only successful in the workplace, it’s also important in all aspects of life. The type of attitude you choose to exhibit can define not only what type of employee you are, but also who you are in the eyes of others.

So here’s my unsolicited advice for anyone who’s working extra hard for a client or colleague and needs some fuel to reach the finish line: Take stock of any negative energy and convert it to the positive.

If you’re like me, you’ll be amazed at what the change can bring at both work and home.
