Getting the Call

Posted by Justin Cange.

The other day I found myself in the "zone" at work. There I was, poring over news headlines, researching Web sites and translating a complex topic into easy-to-understand prose when a foreign distraction derailed me. It was my phone ringing.

After first reacting to the unaccustomed sound like a babysitter in a horror movie, I thought:

"Who could be calling me? "

"Don't they know I'm busy? "

"Am I the only one actually working today? "

I then remembered it was not too long ago that this sort of disturbance was quite customary during my workdays.

After college, I learned quickly that it when it comes to a career in sales, the hardest aspect of any job is factoring for the unexpected - whether it be an unforeseen traffic jam, the inability to "knock on the right door, " or having to be the first line of defense from customers during controversial business decisions. Sales jobs, in my opinion, are a tricky balance between determination, luck and having a reliable automobile.

So as my ring tone continued to blast the sweet sounds of Journey, I realized how far from a traditional sales job I had traveled. With the ability to work from home, long gone are the days of "smiling and dialing, " driving with MapQuest and, of course, business slacks.

I arrived at v-Fluence anxious to make the transition from a tie-wearing, numbers-crunching, cubicle-trapped professional. The change has been welcome. I'm now an interactive PR professional who benefits from v-Fluence's flexible work environment.

My job demands critical thinking, a strong understanding of my client's needs and the refusal to be distracted by normal at-home habits. Thankfully, though, it doesn't involve setting daily appointments throughout the St. Louis metro area, turning my passenger seat into my kitchen or spending the majority of my day relieving my shoulder from holding the phone to my ear.

The reward, of course, is not just getting to set (and stick with) a daily routine but to do so with a forward-thinking firm like v-Fluence, a company that trumpets its staff's eclectic backgrounds.

So, as I convinced myself that it would be in my best interests to give my eyes a rest from my computer, I approached my cell phone to determine who had been the culprit behind this unexpected interruption.

I exhaled a sigh of relief. It was only my Mom.

Doesn't she know I'm busy today?
