Working from Home: Virtually Possible

Posted by Ande Leslie.

It's 2 p.m. on a Wednesday, and the number of people walking around my Chicago neighborhood in the middle of the day always surprises me. Don't these people have jobs? They all must work from home, I tell myself. Well, not all of them, but I'm sure some do. I'm frequently surprised at how often I meet someone who works, or has worked, for a virtual company. When I considered taking this position at v-Fluence, the idea of a virtual environment seemed like unexplored territory. According to a 2006 survey by WorldatWork, however, 14.7 million people work from home on a full-time basis, with an additional 50 million-plus working part-time. At this rate of growth, it's expected that more than 100 million people will work from home by 2010. Apparently, the virtual environment idea isn't quite as unexplored as I once believed.

But really, v-Fluence is becoming less of a virtual environment, and much more a flexible and mobile one. With today's technologies, virtual employees have the opportunity to work, well, virtually anywhere. Our various teams often work together at a local Starbucks, and we find we're not the only ones there with the same idea. And don't be surprised if you see one of us laboring away at the airport, which we all do frequently, as well. Oh, and the best part, we even have the resources and flexibility that allow us to work from a quaint seaside balcony on the shores of Southern Europe (see Christiana's entry Mending a Broken Heart, Seeing the World...All While Working, so long as our performance isn't compromised.

However, what really makes v-Fluence truly successful as a predominantly virtual company is its solid and dependable virtual infrastructure, passionate and dedicated employees and the underlying motivation to provide the very best for our clients and industry at large.
