“70 Degrees and Sunny”
“70 degrees and sunny” may be my favorite phrase and one that I didn’t hear enough during the seven years I lived in Minnesota. Unfortunately, my optimistic move to snowy Minnesota didn’t take the Midwest’s weather into consideration, and, soon, my complaints ballooned from idle chatter to a full-blown obsession. Last summer, I decided to trade in my hourly e-mail updates from Weather.com for San Diego’s predictable sunshine.
This decision proved to be the right one for me as I was quickly won over by San Diego’s fair weather and natural beauty. My only fear, prior to landing a job, was waking up each day to a long commute, only to work in an office filled with fluorescent lighting and beige cubicle walls. San Diego is a town I couldn’t bear to experience only on weekends and after 5 PM.
The decision to work for a virtual company has proven to be a great way to balance my desire for a meaningful career in the public relations field while enjoying San Diego’s beautiful surroundings. Its flexibility allows me to structure my daily hours, within reason, often starting my day early in the morning so that my afternoons are free for a run outdoors. What’s more, I’m able to work in different locations, such as a coffee shop’s patio, or take breaks midday to enjoy the sunny weather.
I now enjoy my favorite phrase on a daily basis, which helps me deliver the best possible results to my clients and fellow co-workers. This work/life balance keeps me motivated and centered and reinforces my faith in virtual companies, not to mention the power of a sunny, 70 degree day.
