Internet Spawns Virtual Assistants Industry; Latest Company to Enter the Field is Handy Business Solutions
In a recent press release, Maryland-based Handy Business Solutions, LLC (HBS) announced that it is now offering outsourced office staff and claims that its “virtual personal assistants” are independent contractors capable of “providing administrative tasks, office management, creative and/or technical services.” Whereas most standard temp agencies rely on a pool of staff that pay short- and long-term visits to offices to fulfill job requirements, HBS’s contractors work from their own offices. In their release, HBS claims that this business model will save various types of personnel overhead.
Impressive model, perhaps, but I was a bit struck by the press release’s silly list of twenty-seven different types of organizations who might find this service useful. Furthermore, when I visited their Web site I practically jumped out of my chair when a stream of electronic music began blaring through my speakers, complete with moving flash buttons and graphics. I turned down the volume and wondered (hoped?) if one of HBS' virtual assistants could re-write the release or re-develop their Web site.
